Nametags Assembly Program

One Revolution’s Nametags™ Assembly Program

Paralympic Athletes share stories of success in the face of adversity.  The 45 minute assembly program employs the motto, “It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens to you,” and teaches students the 4 Ss of Resilience™, questions we can ask ourselves in difficult situations.  Our intentionally universal message encourages students to see obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning instead of roadblocks. We all face challenges. How we address our challenges determines our success.

Program Goals

Resilience

Presenters teach students tools for resilience and how to apply them to the obstacles they face.

Self-Awareness

Challenge students to identify the genius that lies within.

Inclusion

Encourage students to see others for their unique genius.

Perception

Presenters challenge traditionally held beliefs about what it means to be “disabled”.

Presenters recount ways in which they have applied the 4 Ss of Resilience to overcome obstacles in their own lives and encourage students to use those same tools to confront their challenges.

4 S’s of Resilience™

  1. Self – Am I a victim or survivor?
  2. Situation – Is it overwhelming or a challenge?
  3. Support – Am I alone or part of a team?
  4. Strategies – Is there more than one approach?

Albert Einstein once said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

Our Presenters illustrate how labels, or Nametags define the way that we think about ourselves and others.  Presenters use real life experiences that show how labels can often be limitations.

Our Presenters illustrate how labels, or Nametags, can blind us to what’s great in others and ourselves. They use real life experiences that show how labels can often eb limitations and encourage the students to follow their passions and dreams to find their personal geniuses.

Students will be pushed to recognize that everyone struggles. Nametags presenters open up about the details of their past and help students understand why being accepting of others’ differences is so important.

The program encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and ask questions to learn more about their fellow students.  When students learn more about each other, the better their understanding of what they have in common, as opposed to focusing on the differences that separate them, building a more inclusive community.

By definition, disabled means able to do less.  Presenters achievements do not fit the perception of disability, quietly changing perceptions of people with disabilities and limitations.

One Revolution’s mission is to turn perception of disability upside down.  We believe, at our core, that sharing our stories and allowing students to see our struggles creates a deep human connection.  This connection allows students to see themselves in the presenter, changing their perception of disability by focusing on the similarities that connect them.
